The only reason I could think of why they don't upgrade this software is because it's a breeze to upgrade from a 20 year old PLC to a new one, just change the PLC type, take care of the errors caused by a few different instructions and voila, 10 minutes software upgrade. Not to mention there's very little and very vague support online, mainly on forums.Īll big PLC manufacturers have state of the art integrated programming environments and sure, you might say that Omron has Sysmac Studio, but the software is expensive, the controllers are expensive and they are used in complex machines, not your everyday pressure loop pump controls.

Everything from configuring analog inputs/outputs, to PID loops, serial communication, memory management, and that bitch of a data type called BCD is a pain in the ass to understand and then apply to your program, wasting company time in the meantime. It's so annoying how it's structured like bit 7 does this, the next 4 bits do that, etc, not to mention how hard it is to troubleshoot a brand new program.

It's very hard to understand sometimes what it does for every instruction, even if you read the manual several times. It all seems that they stopped developing it 15 years ago and lived with the fact that people buy Omron because of the brand, not the software.Įven the most basic of things turned out to be a challenge to overcome mainly because of the thing that is called control word which is used to configure almost all built-in instructions. It was the first time I ever saw Omron PLC's, having worked until then with Siemens, Schneider and Unitronics, and I must confess, it was a bumpy ride getting used to the programming environment CX-Programmer. So for almost a year now I've beed working as a PLC programmer (among others) at a company specialized in Omron equipment.
